The Old Market, a heart of Potsdam - today the historical center - was designed under Frederick the Great in the middle of the 18th century near the Havel as a Roman square.Already from afar they can be seen - the Nikolai Church with its large green dome and the golden figure of Atlas on the roof of the Old Town Hall. This is where our path leads us. The baroque square of the Old Market Square with the Nikolai Church and the completed new State Parliament building awaits us, together they form the historical center of Potsdam. In the middle of the market square stands a 16 meter high obelisk with portraits of the great Potsdam architects Knobelsdorff, Schinkel, Gontard and Persius.The former Marstall now houses the Potsdam Film Museum. In the Kutschstall behind it, on the Neuer Markt, is the House of Brandenburg-Prussian History.The old market is also home to the traditional museum house - the Potsdam Museum - Forum for Art and History.It is located in the Old City Hall, directly across from the Museum Barberini and the Brandenburg State Parliament. With its glazed main entrance and modern interior, the listed building ensemble provides an ideal setting for an attractive city museum. Another highlight is the new Museum Barberini.
